Japan's Ai Mori showcased her lead prowess but fell short of a podium finish in the Paris Olympics sport climbing boulder and lead on Saturday, coming fourth in the eight-women final.

The 20-year-old Olympic debutant logged 96.1 points for the highest lead total but a meager 39.0 earned earlier in boulder proved costly as she finished on 135.1 in total.

But her struggles on boulder, in which she failed to reach a zone in the first of four problems and topped just one to record the seventh-best score, meant the podium was beyond her reach.

"Getting to climb relaxed while showing my strength at the Olympics, a big stage, is a positive to take and I should get confidence," Mori said.

"There were moments I was close to being overwhelmed by the unique atmosphere, but I closed with a typical climb of mine and I enjoyed it."
