Japan's Daiya Seto fell short of a medal at the Paris Olympics on Friday when he finished seventh in the men's 200-meter individual medley.

The four-time world champion clocked a time of 1 minute, 57.21 at Paris La Defense Arena to touch 3.15 seconds behind Frenchman Leon Marchand, who claimed the crown in Olympic record time.

The win gives Marchand his fourth gold of the games, the most of any athlete so far, with Briton Duncan Scott winning his second consecutive silver in the event and Tokyo champion Wang Shun of China bronze.

"I didn't swim well overall. I was intent on starting the race calm and kicking into the gear from the breaststroke, which was good during the warm-up, but it didn't really click," Seto said.

"I wanted to rewrite my personal bests but was nowhere near it, neither in the 200 nor 400."

The 30-year-old Japanese was close to retirement after a disappointing showing at the Tokyo Games in 2021 where his best result was fourth in the 200 IM. At the Rio Games four years earlier, he won bronze in the 400 IM.

Also in the pool on Friday evening, Japan's Naoki Mizunuma qualified to the men's 100 butterfly final as the eighth fastest swimmer.

Yui Ohashi, the 200 IM gold winner in Tokyo, missed the final of the same event in Paris with only the 12th fastest time in the semifinals.
