Known since his high school days for his high-velocity fastball, it was Shohei Ohtani's foot speed that made news Saturday in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 10-0 win over the Oakland Athletics as he reached 30 steals and 30 home runs for the first time in his career.
Ohtani became the newest member of Major League Baseball's "30-30" club in his 108th game this season. According to MLB.com, only two players have achieved the feat in fewer games.
The two-way star is spending the season focusing on batting and base running as he rehabs his pitching arm after elbow surgery last year. Ohtani leads the National League with 33 home runs.
On Saturday, he went 2-for-5 with three strikeouts, a walk and a run scored. Ohtani stole his 29th base after a first-inning leadoff walk and beat out an infield single in the fifth.
With the Dodgers leading 4-0, Ohtani singled to lead off the ninth, stole second and third, and scored an insurance run before Los Angeles added five more runs in the inning.
According to MLB.com, Eric Davis of the 1987 Cincinnati Reds reached 30 steals and 30 homers in 90 games, while Alex Rodriguez of the 1998 Seattle Mariners needed 107, and Bobby Bonds achieved the feat in 108 games with the 1973 San Francisco Giants.
