The annual Naoshima Fire Festival was held on the Kagawa prefecture island last month, with some 3,000 fireworks launched from the sea near Tsutsujiso, a guesthouse on the coast in Setouchi National Park.
"Yatai" street stalls were welcomed back after being suspended last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the festival venue was decorated with about 40 lanterns made by local elementary school pupils.
About 2,000 visitors, including many families, enjoyed the fireworks from the beach and nearby areas. The show's finale, during which giant fireworks were launched in synchrony with J-pop music, received thunderous applause from the spectators.
Prior to the fireworks show, children performed hula dancing and Naoshima Tsutsuji Japanese drumming during an opening event.
