U.S. President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump each won enough delegates in Tuesday's round of state primaries to clinch their respective parties' nominations for the November general election.
Biden, a Democrat, and Trump, whose remaining Republican rival Nikki Haley dropped out of the race last week, each crossed the threshold for nomination by securing over 50 percent of their parties' total delegates, major U.S. media reported based on projections.
With a commanding win in a primary in Georgia, a key battleground state that was crucial for his victory in the previous presidential election, Biden set the stage for an all-but-certain rematch with Trump for the White House.
With the United States set for its first presidential rematch in 70 years, the 81-year-old incumbent and the 77-year-old former president have already started sniping at each other ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
Primaries for the two parties took place in Georgia, Mississippi and Washington.
To earn the nomination at the Republican National Convention in July, Trump needed to win at least 1,215 delegates. The party's contests on Tuesday, which also included caucuses in Hawaii, were for 161 delegates.
Haley, a former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador, pulled out of the race following losses to Trump in 14 of the 15 states that held Republican nominating contests on what is known as Super Tuesday.
Trump's victory on the most important day of the primary calendar, which awarded around a third of Republican delegates, made it all but certain that he and Biden will face off on Nov. 5.
On the Democratic side, Biden, who had no major primary rival from the start, needed 1,968 delegates and quickly won the roughly 100 delegates he needed on Tuesday to give him the magic number.
The Democratic Party will hold its national convention in August to formalize Biden's nomination.
