Japan-set historical drama "Shogun" collected 25 nominations including outstanding drama series at the U.S. television Emmy Awards to lead the field Wednesday, with Hiroyuki Sanada receiving the nod for best lead actor.
Set in 1600 during Japan's "Sengoku" warring states period, Shogun is a remake of a 1980 miniseries adaptation of James Clavell's 1975 novel. According to local media, the show is only the second majority non-English-language series to be nominated for the top award in the drama series category after South Korea's "Squid Game" in 2022.
Sanada plays Yoshii Toranaga, a warlord modelled on historical figure Tokugawa Ieyasu. His recognition comes after Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, known for collaborations with director Akira Kurosawa in films such as "Seven Samurai," received an Emmy nomination for his performance in the same role in the limited series category in 1981.
Alongside the U.S.-based Sanada, who is also a producer on Shogun, other Japanese performers nominated included Anna Sawai for outstanding lead actress, while Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira received nods in the supporting actor category. All four have been nominated for an Emmy for the first time.
Among its 25 nominations, Shogun also received nods for outstanding writing and music, as well as in numerous technical categories.
The awards ceremony will be held on Sept. 15 in Los Angeles.
